I have managed my own company since 2003 when I finally got tired of doing a job that I didn’t enjoy and decided to start doing something I loved.
The crazy thing is that i had a great job. I was HR Vice President for a video game company. Before that I had worked in HR within the music industry. I LOVE music! Video games are fun! And yet I didn’t enjoy my job, which turned out to be because I was fundamentally unsuited for it. It just wasn’t what I was meant to be doing.
I had always loved to write and always wished I could be an author, but the truth was that fiction wasn’t my thing. My real skill was in synthesizing lots of information, seeing to the core message and writing that in a way anyone could understand – which made me a really excellent resume writer. Since I started my business, we have expanded. We still write resumes, but we also help people build effective online presences and we offer coaching services. Instead of resume writing, we focus on personal marketing.
I love what I do – it’s the right job for me – and I love helping others identify and communicate their authentic value proposition, so they can feel the same way about work.
My work has appeared on Monster.com. The Ladders and in numerous resume books. My company is recommended by career coaches and recruiters all over the US. I founded and currently edit Career Hub. I have written 3 books with more on the way. I have been lucky enough to experience success far beyond what I imagined when I started … but still the most satisfying thing for me is to hear from a client that she secured a great position doing exactly what she was supposed to be doing, or from an entrepreneur that his revenue has grown as a result of his new personal marketing strategy. That is success!
